The Work of Maestra
"I got the Caucus Brothers, Lawless Lovers, ALL the colors all infatuated with the WORDS I utter."
Performing Artist
Maestra is extremely passionate about being on stage. With over 7 years of experience in performing in front of large audiences (not including an additional 12+ years of music and theatrical experience prior to becoming an independent artist), this artist continues to perform at showcases, festivals, organizations, community events and more.
While not necessarily considering herself a gospel rapper, her lyrics contain truth, the good news and inspiration. The connection she makes with the audience is not of a typical hip-hop performance. Much like the in moments of healing she witnessed in her grandfather's ministry as a child, people have stood from wheelchairs, people have been brought to tears and some have given testimonies of deliverance following some of Maestra's performances.
Another great moment was at a Northern High School (Durham, NC) talent show produced by her mentor Irving Truitt, Jr. Maestra performed as a guest artist amongst the many talented high school students who showcased their gifts that evening. Unplanned and during her performance of "Pretty Girls," so many students came from different directions and danced on stage and in the aisles of the theater. It was absolutely epic. She prides her self on making music for everyone, but it's a whole other level when the kids love the music too.

"M-A-E-S-T-R-A, and I got em wonderin what I'm doin today!"
Recording Artist
One of the greatest projects Maestra had the pleasure of working on is a miniature version of herself in that she loves learning and music. The journey from being a free spirit growing to understand the world to a mom who has to make things work, even when she doesn't have it all figured out, has inspired her craft in many ways.
"J-La" has travelled with Maestra to many areas, just so she can put in work with no excuses. The artist is reminded of the days when she, herself, travelled with her grandfather to various cities, so he could preach The Gospel and do God's work. Maestra likes to think of her music as a tool to do God's work as well. Not all her music is Christian rap, but many songs are used to inspire people to love one another and live righteously.
Funny how the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, and they say teachers love apples.
"I'm a Monster with These Features, the Greatest of All Teachers"
Aside from working on her own projects, Maestra spends much time recording for other artists as a feature. It is a blessing to have some of the greatest artists in the state of North Carolina reach out to her requesting a hook, verse or both. There are often people who she never knew were watching her perform onstage direct messaging her via social media in order to collaborate.
Lena Jackson, Nacynze, OC Taylor, Filthy Finesse, Tru Flamez, B. Totty, Defacto Thezpian and Swami da Bullhemian are only a few artists with whom the artist worked in the studio. In the photo above, Maestra had the pleasure of doing a feature for Fam U where they expressed the love for the color of their skin. Maestra loves working with artists who share her ideals and interests. It shows there is so much strength in numbers.
"Only a misfit when it comes to being in the booth.
I got a daughter, and you know I do this for the youth.
I'm trynna represent for the youngins back at home
Who fill as if they're goin through the struggle all alone."
Recording has been a method of becoming timeless. This emcee spent many hours and countless nights in the recording studio, but she could never grow tired of doing so. As a matter of a fact, she can't seem to be in the studio enough.
Bull CIty Sound Studio, Raleighwood Studio and Kuttin Edge Studio with Major Green, Playground Studios with Chaka Harley, and Livewire Entertainment Studios with Brian Staples are only a few studios where she has had the pleasure of working. Maestra also worked in studios with engineers such as Mike King, Doc Junya, Fin the DJ and B. Totty.
It all seems so surreal at this point in her music experience. Maestra recalls the days of recording from just a laptop with a built-in microphone. Who knew it would all come to this? Music is no longer just a hobby or something she just enjoys; she is able to use something she loves to take care of her household and community.
